In the most remote part of the Sierra Tarahumara, in the distance of the mountains, the Rarámuri culture converges, in the state of Chihuahua. There, he meets a species of superhumans with the ability to travel enormous distances.

Capable of wandering in all kinds of complicated terrain, Rarámuris are born to run. This skill, a lifestyle for them, has little by little taken it to the international level in competitions in which they have transcended. This is the case of Yulisa Fuentes, Isidora Rodríguez, Lucía Nava, Argelia Orpinel, Rosa Ángela and Verónica Palma, becoming ambassadors of their community after placing third in The Speed ​​Project, a 550-kilometer race.

Since last Friday, the Mexican warriors tested their physical abilities on a route that started in Los Angeles and ended on Sunday in Las Vegas.

Accustomed to traveling along steep trails and unusual paths, the test was very similar to the mountainous terrain in which they move daily in the Sierra Madre Occidental. Thus, each of the members waited for her turn to take action.

The 550 kilometers had to be divided between the six, with the difficulty that the format was contested non-stop, that is, day and night, and for three days. All with some experience in different competitions, their running tradition was demonstrated.

With their peculiar huaraches and their sipuchaka, a wide skirt made of printed fabric and very striking colors, which is given volume with others worn underneath, the Rarámuris participants, also known as Tarahumaras, accelerated their pace, each one, covering around of 90 kilometers. Despite the adversity of the climate and the different paths in which they came into contact, they demonstrated their athletic qualities.

Without the tools of a conventional athlete, the Rarámuris demonstrated an enviable resistance that any other athlete would like to develop. Despite not training with the comforts that other competitors have, Yulisa, Isidora Lucía, Argelia, Rosa and Verónica, all mothers, crossed the finish line in 52 hours between faces of satisfaction and gestures of disbelief, and surrounded by people who They magnified their titanic work.

Being the first team of Rarámuris to participate in the race, they expected to reach a donation of 500 thousand pesos; However, they only raised 234,093 pesos, according to the Donadora.org website.

Their achievement adds to the recognition that other women in their community have earned. One of the most remembered names in recent times is the case of Lorena Ramírez, recognized by the documentary that Netflix made of her: Lorena, the one with bare feet. Her story gained notoriety when she participated in a series of ultra-distance races in other countries, wearing traditional clothing and handmade huaraches.

It is there in the depths of the mountain ranges where a culture emerges that preserves ancient traditions and is characterized by communion with nature. In this place, where transportation is practically non-existent, it is the cradle of a population that personifies strength and an indomitable spirit capable of inspiring millions.

Due to the podium, Diana González, head of Tourism in Guachochi, called to receive the six Mexican women who raised the name of their community and the country. She announced that upon her arrival at the Chihuahua airport, almost at midnight, they will be sheltered with a welcome ceremony.
