Feasibility study for the Frankenbahn starts

The Main-Tauber district has started a feasibility study on the Frankenbahn with great support and under the leadership of the Baden-Württemberg local transport company. This emerges from a press release from the Main-Tauber District District Office. The Frankenbahn is the rail traffic artery between the cities of Würzburg, Heilbronn and Stuttgart. The district therefore has a legitimate interest in the expansion of this rail route and is relying on higher speed and better quality for this rail route, according to the announcement. At the same time, the district administration appeals to the citizens to use the regional train service between Osterburken, Lauda and Würzburg.

The bidding consortium RMCon (International Rail Management Consultants GmbH) from Hanover is responsible for the study. “We are counting on the feasibility study determining and implementing further stabilizing measures for the Frankenbahn,” District Administrator Reinhard Frank is quoted in the message. The Main-Tauber district is very keen that the Frankenbahn is secured and further developed through expansion measures. “We hope that the measures that are already in progress, such as the one-hour cycle, will lead to continuous operation of the regional train,” adds Jochen Müssig, Head of the Main-Tauber District District Office.

During the opening event, he pointed out that in addition to the expansion measures already agreed at the Gerlachsheim, Grünsfeld, Zimmer and Wittighausen train stations, the section from Lauda towards Osterburken must not be forgotten, according to the report. The district office informs that the expansion at the Königshofen, Wölchingen, Eubigheim and Rosenberg stations is pending.

Study divided into several sections

The feasibility study is divided into several work packages. Work package one deals with the recording of the framework conditions, such as the infrastructure and the timetable. The measures are assessed in work package two. The costs are determined and compared with the operational benefits. Work package three provides for the investigation of timetable concepts. In the fourth work package, a concept is drawn up, and in the fifth work package, all investigation results are documented, informs the district office.

Examples of the actual survey in work package one are the expansion and modernization of the stations, level platform access and the improvements to the control and safety technology at the Gerlachsheim, Grünsfeld, Zimmer and Wittighausen train stations. The same applies to the Bavarian section of the expansion of the Heidingsfeld-West stop and the Baden section of the reconstruction of the Osterburken station. There, the stump track is to be extended to park regional trains, according to the report.

Königshofen platform affects operations

According to the announcement, the Main-Tauber district demands that the Königshofen, Wölchingen, Eubigheim and Rosenberg stations also be taken into account. Dietmar Maier from the NVBW explained that initially only the Königshofen platform has an impact on operations. The second track is missing there. Therefore, from the point of view of the Main-Tauber district, care must be taken that the entire route is actually expanded.

The regional express train Würzburg-Heilbronn-Stuttgart, the regional train Würzburg-Lauda-Osterburken and the regional train Osterburken-Heilbronn should be checked as a matter of priority. If the timetable is adjusted, it should be noted that the connections are reached at the Würzburg ICE junction. The completion of ?? Stuttgart 21 ?? and the planned Germany cycle also have an impact on the schedule, so the message.

Interim results in March 2021

The first interim results from the feasibility study will be available in March 2021 and May 2021. The final presentation is planned for July or August 2021. The final report is to be presented in August.
