Fear the Spotlight Devs Explain Blumhouse Video Game, Black Phone Idea

Blumhouse Unveils First Video Game, “Fear the Spotlight,” for Spooky Season

Horror enthusiasts have reason to celebrate this spooky season as Blumhouse Productions—known for its spine-chilling films—is stepping beyond the silver screen into the gaming universe. On October 22, 2023, the entertainment giant launched its inaugural video game, “Fear the Spotlight,” developed by indie studio Cozy Game Pals. This innovative title blends the atmospherics of vintage horror with modern gaming, marking an exciting new chapter for Blumhouse.

A Love Letter to 90s Horror

“Fear the Spotlight” is crafted as “a creepy love letter to classic 90s horror experiences,” focusing on rich storytelling, intricate puzzle-solving, and a tension-filled atmosphere. The game is tailored for players who are newcomers to the horror genre, making it an ideal entry point for those seeking to explore darker narratives.

The story follows Vivian, a young girl delving into the unsettling history of Sunnyside High. Through a séance with her rebellious friend Amy, Vivian finds herself stranded and hunted by a lurking monster that prowls the school’s abandoned halls. She must evade its gaze, locate her friend, and uncover a tragic truth that has haunted the corridors for decades.

A Passionate Partnership

“Being Blumhouse’s first game has been weird,” said Bryan Singh, co-founder of Cozy Game Pals, in an interview with Variety. He further emphasized the thrill of working with Blumhouse: “It’s been so crazy for them to have this much excitement and confidence in our game.”

The journey of Cozy Game Pals began when Singh, a veteran game developer with previous credits on influential titles like “The Last of Us” and “Uncharted 4,” teamed up with animator Crista Castro, formerly of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Together, they decided to invest two years of savings into creating their own game studio, ultimately manifesting their vision in “Fear the Spotlight.”

More Than Just Frights

While the game embraces the horror genre, Singh and Castro have infused it with heartwarming elements that set it apart from traditional horror narratives. “We write what we like and what we find fun or interesting,” Castro explained. “And this is where the coziness comes out, especially in our ending. It’s a bit feel-good.”

Singh added, “We’re really not cynical people. Often in horror, you have the bleak outlook at the end, but we sought a scenario where the characters resonate with us and portray sincerity. We hope the game concludes with some sentimentality.”

Expanding Horizons: Future Projects

With “Fear the Spotlight” now released, Cozy Game Pals are looking ahead to new opportunities. Singh and Castro express interest in transforming Blumhouse properties into video game narratives, particularly citing the 2021 film “The Black Phone” as a prime candidate.

“A little kid figuring out puzzles in the locked room—that’s a video game premise,” Singh noted, highlighting the adaptable storytelling potential of Blumhouse’s cinematic universe.

Moving Forward with Intent

Blumhouse is focused on supporting fresh horror stories from indie developers, as explained by Louise Blain, creative lead at Blumhouse Games. “We’re not ruling out adapting Blumhouse IP, but any associated game must align authentically with the narrative we want to convey,” she stated. Blain emphasized the importance of creating innovative horror storytelling, reminiscent of Blumhouse’s initial voyage in the film industry.

Engaging the Community

As the horror landscape evolves, gamer and film fans alike are invited to dive into “Fear the Spotlight.” This unique blend of storytelling and gameplay presents a thrilling experience designed for a diverse audience.
