“There is a constant stench and pollution levels are very high.”
New Delhi is covered in thick smog every year, mainly due to the burning of stubble by farmers in nearby areas to clear their plowed fields.
Levels of particulate matter, cancer-causing microparticles known as PM2.5 pollutants that enter the blood through the lungs, rose to nearly 23 times the maximum daily limit recommended by the World Health Organization.
According to the research company IQAir on Wednesday, the pollution reached 344 micrograms per cubic meter, which is considered dangerous air, being considered among the worst in the world.
Air pollution is expected to worsen during the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, which falls on November 1 this year when smoky fireworks emit toxins during the festive season.
