A striking sight on the Heelmeesterstraat in Schiedam: next to a boarded-up home of a drug criminal, there are eight large bags filled with sand. The neighbor is afraid of another explosion, resulting in damage to his house. The sandbags make him feel safer.
“I don’t want to have cracks in my wall again,” says the 61-year-old Schiedammer. He has become afraid of explosions at the house of his neighbor René F., who is himself in custody: in December he was given a thirty-month prison sentence for involvement in a drug lab on Goeree-Overflakkee.
The first explosion occurred at F.’s home in December, and there was another this month. Another case is pending against the drug criminal surrounding a mistaken murder in 2014 in which mental health care director Rob Zweekhorst was shot dead. F. would have been the client. He himself denies involvement.
Drawings
The total weight of the bags is approximately 8,000 kilos. From F.’s home, the sandbag wall looks gloomy, but on the inside it is decorated with cheerful drawings, colored by the concerned neighbor’s grandchildren.
“We want to make a virtue of necessity. Try to bring a smile to local residents,” he says to the regional broadcaster Rijnmond. The drawings will be further colored in next Easter weekend.

The man has not been able to sleep well for some time. After the explosion in December, there was also significant damage to his home: the kitchen wall was damaged, the front door was out of plumb and there were large cracks in the wall. His wife’s car that was parked in front of the door was a total loss.
Previously, local residents expressed their frustration after another explosive device exploded.
The impact on the neighborhood is significant, says a local resident. “My neighbor has two small children. Such a child is of course completely upset after something like that.”
The neighbor who placed the sandbags also suffers from this. “My grandchildren no longer want to sleep with me,” he tells the regional broadcaster.
