“Fear in Italy of another corona outbreak in the south of the country” | NOW

In Italy, there are fears that a new corona outbreak will take place, but in the south of the country, reports the BBC Thursday. The north, mainly the Lombardy region, was severely affected by the coronavirus, but it now seems to be slowing down its spread there. In the south of the country, however, there has been a sharp increase in the number of confirmed infections.

More than eight thousand people in Italy have died to date from the effects of COVID-19 virus. The number of confirmed infections has passed 80,000. This makes Italy the most affected country in Europe.

The virus is not yet as widespread in southern Italy as it is in the north. However, two more southern regions, Lazio and Campania, fear the consequences if the virus begins to take hold there. The south of the country is predominantly poorer than the north and also has a less good care system.

In Campania, of which Naples is the capital, 74 people have died so far. In Lazio, with Rome as its capital, the number is 95.

Campania President Vincenzo De Luca recently sent an open letter to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte saying that he is “on the eve of a large increase in infections that we cannot bear.”

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
