FDP Wil: No further loans in reserve for the Turm property

The FDP Wil criticizes the approach in connection with the planned development of the Turm property. Before further measures are initiated and thus further costs are incurred, the fundamental question must be clarified as to which owner wants to use and operate the property for what purpose in the future and what investment and follow-up costs the city will incur in the short and long term.

“The FDP is happy to lend a hand if a sponsor has a concrete and good idea for the future use of the tower property and would like to implement it in an uncomplicated way together with the city,” the FDP continued. This can be both short- and long-term and there is no obstacle to cultural use.

According to the party leadership of the FDP Wil, the initial situation around the Turm property is unsatisfactory. While the old fire department depot, which is largely empty, causes annual recurring costs for the city, the city council is applying for further “loans in reserve” for an as yet unknown interim use. “Promoting further temporary use is not expedient,” the liberals say in their position paper. Instead, sustainable use should be established quickly. The city council should approach potential actors actively and with an open mind and involve them in the conceptual work. The future management of the property does not have to be carried out a priori by the city.

“The FDP is happy to lend a hand if a sponsor has a concrete and good idea for the future use of the tower property and would like to implement it in an uncomplicated way together with the city,” the FDP continued. This can be both short- and long-term and there is no obstacle to cultural use. However, one is not willing to make further loans without binding intentions about the future use and management of the property.

If it turns out that no concrete usage concept with binding third-party commitments can be developed in the foreseeable future and that the tower property is not intended to play a central role in the city’s real estate and location strategy, then selling the property should be considered again.
