FDP Members Vote to Stay in Traffic Lights, but Party Is Torn Internally

The FDP members voted to stay in the traffic lights. But the result is so close that the traffic light goes into the new year with a mortgage.

The FDP party leadership can only be happy about the results of the member survey at first glance. A second look shows that the party is torn internally. Despite the high risks, 47 percent of the members who voted would be willing to leave the traffic light government.

Of course: the coalition critics in particular felt motivated by the survey. But even against this background, the result cannot hide the reality: there have been rumblings at the grassroots level for months. While the political experiment of forming a coalition with two left-wing parties still seemed appealing after the 2021 election, today even the greatest optimists consider it a resounding failure. A real hostility has developed, especially towards the Greens.

The FDP members are very frustrated

Party leader Lindner can only be happy about this New Year’s gift for a short time. 75 years after their founding, the Liberals are still faced with a dilemma after this vote: if they leave the traffic lights, they will finally prove themselves unfit to govern. If they stay in the coalition, they will have to fear the frustration of their own supporters and being thrown out of the Bundestag in the next federal election.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the three parties will find their way back to constructive politics in 2024. Instead, the SPD, Greens and FDP will try to make a name for themselves. There will be long months until the 2025 federal election.
