Berlin. The new FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai has defended the liberals’ easing of measures to deal with the corona pandemic. The situation today is different than in 2020, said Djir-Sarai on Sunday at the FDP federal party conference in Berlin. “We have therefore made sure that we have returned to normality responsibly and with a sense of proportion.” Vulnerable groups would continue to be protected, at the same time the personal responsibility of the citizens would be strengthened.
“Restrictions on fundamental rights without a specific reason and in advance are no longer possible,” said Djir-Sarai. It is not freedom that needs to be justified, but rather its limitations. “This is in no way a perverted concept of freedom and certainly not an expression of maximum egoism. That is the rule of law.”
In the traffic light coalition, the FDP was the driving force behind the lifting of almost all corona restrictions. Critics say this is premature. (dpa)
