Berlin. FDP General Secretary Bijan Djir-Sarai described it as a “big mistake” that the traffic light coalition was unable to agree on how to deal with the pandemic policy. “The FDP has emphatically called for a Bundestag committee to examine the Corona measures, for example a committee of inquiry or a study commission,” said Djir-Sarai to the “Rheinische Post” on Saturday. “It would be a big mistake if it didn’t happen in the first place.”
The traffic light parties agreed that the pandemic policy should be addressed, but were unable to agree on a committee. While the FDP wanted a study commission made up of experts and politicians, the Greens favored a committee without politicians. The SPD had spoken out in favor of a citizens’ assembly and a process that also takes states and municipalities into account.
“This will further weaken the population’s trust in democratic institutions and their ability to analyze errors and correct themselves,” said Djir-Sarai. “Unfortunately, I have the feeling that parts of the government coalition did not see the urgency of coming to terms with it.”
