The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday allowed adults 18 and older vaccinated with Moderna to receive a booster injection five months after their second dose, shortening the waiting period by one month.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) originally recommended Moderna boosters for adults in October.

“Vaccination is our best defense against Covid-19, including circulating variants, and shortening the time between completing a primary series and receiving a booster dose may help reduce the decline immunity, ”said Dr. Peter Marks, FDA group leader responsible for vaccine safety.
Earlier this week, the FDA cleared all people 12 years and older who received the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine to receive a booster dose at least five months after their second dose, up from six previously.
The United States is currently facing an unprecedented wave of Covid-19 infections, with an average of more than 600,000 new cases per day over seven days, according to an analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University. This is a 72% increase from the previous week and a record since the start of the pandemic.
