FDA Gives Permission to Use Pfizer as a Covid-19 Booster Vaccine for 12-Year-Old Children

Suara.com – The Food and Drug Administration or the United States FDA grants an injection permit booster vaccine Pfizer’s Covid-19 for children 12 years and over on Monday (3/1) local time. In addition, the gap between the initial vaccination and the additional dose was also reduced, from six months to five months for all ages.

The FDA’s decision was prompted by the widespread availability of omicron variants in many US states, and also by the proximity of millions of schoolchildren returning to class after the holidays.

Previously, the FDA had approved a booster dose Pfizer vaccine-BioNTech for immunocompromised children aged 5-11 years, including for example individuals receiving organ transplants.

The agency said it relied on data from Israel, where thousands of children aged 12 to 15 have received booster doses of Pfizer’s Covid-19 virus.

In addition, more than 4.1 million people aged 16 years and over in Israel have received a booster, five months after the initial two-dose vaccination, and as a result no new safety concerns have emerged.

“Authorization of booster vaccination is carried out at five months rather than six months because it can provide individuals with better and faster protection against the highly contagious variant of omicron,” the FDA said in a statement.

Even with the FDA’s approval, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still needs to give final approval for the decision.

The CDC is expected to be able to issue a decision soon in the next few days, given the spike in positive cases of Covid-19 in the US again increasing. The country’s daily average is now around 400,000, the highest on record since the pandemic began two years ago, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Hospitalizations have also increased, but still lower than the peak of the wave recorded over the past year.

However, hospitalizations for sick children with Covid-19 have increased, triggered by lower vaccination rates. Even so, officials want schools to stay open as much as possible.
