The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new vaccine against COVID-19 this Monday.
Although this new vaccine promises to protect against Omicron subvariants at a time when there is an increase in cases in the country, including in the city of Chicago, many are wondering how much it will cost them since this dose will not be covered by the federal government.
Babies over six months and anyone may be eligible for the new booster. Those who were recently vaccinated against COVID-19 will have to wait at least two months.
Although the FDA approved the vaccine from pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and Moderna this Monday afternoon, the advisory committee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will release its own recommendations on this new vaccine.
“The new COVID-19 vaccine is monovalent and now that we have it available and tomorrow we receive the recommendations of the advisory committee on practical immunization, in practice of the CDC the previous vaccine already disappears because we already have a new updated one,” explained Dr. Geraldine Luna, of the Chicago Department of Public Health.
It is worth mentioning that this will be the first vaccine available against COVID-19 whose costs will not be covered by the federal government.
Both Pfizer and Moderna announced they would be pricing each vaccine dose at more than $100.
Health insurance may cover the vaccine or a large percentage of it. However, for those who do not have health insurance, Dr. Luna maintained that the city of Chicago continues to provide the vaccines for free.
