FC Volders was the first real test of FC Wacker Innsbruck. However, the traditional Tyrolean club ultimately mastered the task with ease.
Double strike decides match
952 spectators at the Volders sports ground saw the expected intense game. In the scorching heat, both teams gave it their all in the evenly balanced opening phase. They fought for every inch. Although the Wackerians had more of the game, chances to score were initially few and far between. It was only after a very welcome drink break ordered by referee Schiefer that the first action of note took place. Okan Yilmaz was there to deal with a cross from Lucas Scholl. Volders goalkeeper Sukiasyan prevented his team from falling behind (28th minute). The Wackerians repeatedly tried to score with quick combination play, but the hosts’ defense stood strong and usually had a leg in the way before the final pass. There was little to see from the red and blacks in attack, Wacker’s defense had the opponent under control.
At the start of the second half, new attacking forces came into play in the form of Rami Tekir and Luis Gstrein. But FC Volders had the first promising chance. After losing the ball in midfield, Triendl tested FCW goalkeeper Lukas Tauber, who safely saved the Volders playmaker’s low shot. But now the guests from Innsbruck increased the pressure. Scholl (54th) and Tekir (58th) came close to the longed-for lead with their shots, but it was Alexander Joppich who scored a spectacular goal. In the 60th minute, the Black and Greens showed another successful attacking combination, which ended in a cross to Joppich. The FCW returnee completed this successful move with a heel kick to score his first goal of the season. Just four minutes later, Gstrein also got on the scoresheet for the first time. After another quick combination, he appeared in front of the opponent’s goal and extended the lead. The Volderers, who had been holding their own until then, were now unable to add to their lead. The Wackerians were different: Substitute Bright Owusu had two good chances (72nd, 76th) but was unable to get the ball into the goal. In the 84th minute, however, he was played in midfield, escaped his opponents and scored with a low shot to give FC Wacker Innsbruck a 3-0 away win in Volders.
