FCL’s European Dream Ends with Mistakes: Hibernian Edinburgh Defeats FC Luzern in ECL Qualifier

The European adventure is already over for FC Luzern. After the success against Djurgardens, Mario Frick’s team fails at Hibernian Edinburgh.

As in the first leg, against the Scots it is individual mistakes that break the FCL’s neck. After the 1: 3 in Edinburgh, the 2: 2 at home is not enough. “There were too many gifts across both games,” confirms Captain Max Meyer in an interview.

Despite this, he maintains that his team did not put in a bad performance. “Today you can’t blame the team,” says Meyer. “But we are disappointed and have planned more.”

You can hardly start less than optimally if you have to make up for a 1: 3: After just 10 minutes, FC Luzern is behind at home. And as in the first leg, an individual error is at the root. A throw-in is too long, ex-FCSG striker Elie Youan runs and scores (slightly deflected) to take the lead.

However, the home team is not shocked – they react immediately. After 16 minutes it’s Jakub Kadak who slides in to equalize. He already scored in the 1-1 draw against YB at the weekend.

In the further course of the first half, it is the FCL that comes up with the better chances. But neither Dorn nor Ottiger succeed in the end. After the change of sides, coach Mario Frick brings forward Kemal Ademi. But until minute 65, the catch-up fireworks are a long time coming.

But then Joker hits Ademi, hits a corner after a corner! At this point, FC Luzern is still one goal away from extra time. “After I scored, I felt that there was more to it,” says Ademi at Nau.ch.

Substitute Chader narrowly missed – and shortly afterwards the FCL was given a cold shower. The Hibernians counter, Burch simply stands still after a duel against Youan. And in the middle Boyle pushes in to make it 2:2. Another gift to the Scots! “After that it was difficult to come back,” said Ademi.

After the shock, Mario Frick reacts and brings in another striker in Abubakar for the unfortunate Burch. However, the people from the city of Light, despite chances and tricky scenes, no longer manage to score.

So it’s the Hibernians who get to face Aston Villa in the next round. For the FCL is it on Sunday in the cup against Angles SG further.

For Captain Max Meyer, however, it is important to emphasize that the club is developing well. “The club can be proud of what has been achieved in the last 12 months.” We will continue to work hard to be able to experience such evenings again.
