FCL fan violence in Bern: Now there is a threat of a blocked fan curve

“Transport police officer was kicked” – now the FCL curve is in danger of being closed

FCL chaotics injured two railway safety officers on Saturday. Now we will examine how the cascade model is used.

At the Wankdorf S-Bahn station in Bern, two railway employees were attacked and injured by violent FCL supporters.

Since the end of summer 2023, the FCL supporters have behaved inconspicuously and calmly, and nothing has been reported about any riots. But now there was another act of violence in which two people were injured: On Saturday after the FCL’s away game at YB in Bern, chaotic people attacked an employee of the SBB and the BLS. Both were injured and had to seek medical treatment, as the Bern cantonal police announced on Sunday.

The injured are a transport police officer from SBB and a security employee from BLS. According to the police, they were attacked on the platform as the fans boarded the special train. According to a report by 20 minutes “The transport police officer was kicked on the platform.” The BLS employee was tripped, but was able to get up again. The special train brought the Lucerne supporters from the Wankdorf S-Bahn station in Bern back to Lucerne. According to SBB, the train left Wankdorf at 9:13 p.m. instead of 8:30 p.m. due to a vehicle malfunction.

Cascade model provides for sector blocking

The attack may not only have legal consequences for the perpetrators, but could also have consequences for the entire FCL fan base. The cascade model against fan violence of the Conference of Cantonal Justice and Police Directors (KKJPD) stipulates that violence against people with injuries results in sector closures in the stadium. This should happen promptly, specifically within the next one or two games, with the fan curve of the offending club being affected for at least one game. “If possible, the measure will be taken at the offending fans’ home games,” says the cascade model that has been in effect since this season. In the Swissporarena, this could apply to the FCL home game against Yverdon next Saturday and possibly to the match against GC on November 3rd.

Authorities already have the case on their radar

The incident in Bern was reported to the KKJPD’s licensing authority working group by the responsible Bern cantonal police in consultation with the city of Bern. According to the Bern cantonal police, this working group, led by Frédéric Favre, head of the Valais Department of Security, will “discuss and assess the incident in a timely manner”. It is not up to the Bern cantonal police to judge which stage of the cascade model the incident should be assigned to.

No statement was available from FC Luzern on Monday about an impending sector ban. According to media director Markus Krienbühl, we are now waiting for the next steps.

Police want to identify perpetrators with video recordings

According to a police spokeswoman for the Bern Cantonal Police, both the motive and the number of people involved are still the subject of ongoing investigations. In order to clarify this, the police are checking any existing video material. The police have not revealed exactly how the railway employees were injured by the violent fans.

Will the FCL fan curve now be blocked after the violent incident in Bern?
