FCC Bans AI-Generated Voices in Robocalls: New Ruling Makes Use of Automated Calls Illegal in the US

Last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) made a decision to ban the use of artificial intelligence (AI) generated voices in robocalls. The decision comes after New Hampshire residents received fake voice messages impersonating US President Joe Biden advising them not to vote in the state’s primary.

According to the US law governing telemarketing (Telephone Consumer Protection Act – TCPA), AI-generated voices are now considered “artificial or pre-recorded voice”. Consequently, the ruling makes AI-generated voices used in unwarranted or automated robocalls illegal and punishable in the United States.

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has pointed out that scammers often use robocalls with AI-generated voices to sound as believable as possible in front of victims and in this way, for example, extort money. Recently, such robocalls are increasingly being used to impersonate celebrities, spread misinformation, etc. As the US presidential election approaches, it is even more important to limit the use of such fraudulent tools as much as possible.

I invite you to listen to a recent episode of our podcast, where we talk directly with a representative of CSC Telecom about robocalls:
