Bundesliga: This is FC Bayern Munich
The Bayern Football Club, Munich e. V., was founded on February 27, 1900 in the Gasthaus Bäckerhöfl under the leadership of Franz John by eleven football players who had left the “Men’s Gymnastics Club Munich of 1879”. In January 1906 the club merged with the Münchener Sport-Club, the largest sports club in Munich at the time, which enabled the financially strengthened FC Bayern to invite prominent foreign teams.
On June 12, 1932, FC Bayern won its first German championship against Eintracht Frankfurt in Nuremberg after the club had failed in the final in 1926, 1928 and 1929. The next big success of the football club came only after the Second World War, when Bayern defeated Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 in the final of the DFB Cup on December 29, 1957 in Augsburg’s Rosenaustadion in front of 42,000 spectators.
Two years after the first game of the German Football Bundesliga, which was played between Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen on August 24, 1963, FC Bayern also made it into the premier league of German football in 1965. The club’s first team has been playing in the Bundesliga without interruption since the 65/66 season and is German record champions with a total of 30 championship titles and also German record cup winners with 20 cup wins. In second and third place are 1. FC Nürnberg with nine championship titles and Borussia Dortmund with eight.
With around 293,000 members (as of 2019), FC Bayern Munich is the sports club in the world with the largest number of members. In addition, the association is supported by 358,000 active fan club members in almost 4500 fan clubs. FC Bayern celebrated the greatest successes in the club’s history in the last decade when the team won the so-called “Big Triple” in 2013 and 2020: victory in the national championship (Bundesliga), win a national cup (DFB Cup) and win one European Cup (UEFA Champions League) within one season. Since 1966, only eight clubs in Europe have achieved this and only FC Bayern twice.
