Cheers at FC Winterthur, consternation at FC Zurich: scenes after the late 2-1.
Ennio Leanza (Keystone)
Sometimes football is brutal. The FCZ is feeling that right now. On Sunday he believes he scored the winning goal against Lucerne deep into stoppage time to make it 2-1. Until the video referee intervenes and cancels the hit.
Yesterday evening on the Schützenwiese he believes he can get around conceding a goal in the 2-1 defeat deep into stoppage time. Nishan Burkart scored for FC Winterthur in the 93rd minute. But the assistant on the line indicates an offside. And is corrected by VAR shortly afterwards. 95th minute, the goal counts.
The FCZ dropped five points in two games in which they started as big favorites. For the time being, he no longer has to worry in depth about the question of whether he can actually compete for the championship title again.
The Schützenwiese is sold out again
In the end, the stadium, which was sold out with over 8,000 spectators, was a madhouse – except in the corner with the FCZ fans. And the fact that the people of Zurich have to leave as losers that night also has to do with someone who grew up in Zurich.
Sayfallah Ltaief was a junior at FCZ until he was deemed not good enough there and had to move to FC Winterthur. This assessment hurt FC Zurich on Wednesday.
The team, which was the Super League leader a few days ago, struggled to get going for a half. This is due to their offensive game, which doesn’t work at all. And that is due to their defense, which is constantly overrun and outplayed – by one person in particular: Ltaief.
Ltaief, always Ltaief
The 23-year-old wing is Winterthur’s top scorer (6 goals). And he ensures that his team can take the lead. First he provokes a corner with running and dribbling. And as soon as the ball is at his feet again, he quickly passes around Antonio Marchesano and sets up for Basil Stillhart, who makes it 1-0.
It’s a well-deserved goal; up until this moment, almost only Winterthur had attacked and shined. And yet it is also a lucky goal. First, Stillhart’s shot rolls past several FCZ bodies and then flies through the legs of goalie Yanick Brecher.
The incredible FCZ goal
The FCZ has almost nothing to offer until the break. And yet he doesn’t go back into the cabin with a residue – just out of pure stupidity. Marchesano made it 1-1 in the 44th minute because he was shot by Winterthur defender Loïc Lüthi in such a way that the ball flew over goalie Marvin Keller and into the goal.
After days of snow and rain, the lawn in Winterthur is holding up surprisingly well. And after almost 45 minutes of start-up time, the FCZ also found its way into the game in the second half. He is not always stylish. Especially not when Nikola Boranijasevic sent FCW striker Aldin Turkes alone at Brecher with a bad pass and escaped with horror (78th). Or when shortly afterwards Matteo Di Giusto failed due to Brecher.
However, the people of Zurich also have their chances, especially in the restless, fast-paced final phase. Jonathan Okita fails because of Keller. Substitute Ivan Santini narrowly misses the goal. And then comes this moment with Burkart that decides the match.
Winterthur wins for the first time after four defeats in a row and gains some breathing room in the looming relegation battle. And the FCZ has to make sure that it doesn’t get further out of step right before the winter break. On Saturday he has to go to St. Gallen.
Phew! For a moment it looked as if the two teams wanted to let the sold-out Schützenwiese gently fall asleep in the second half. And then this final phase: Di Giusto missed the goal for Winterthur, Keller prevented Okita from scoring for FCZ.
And then comes the 93rd minute, a fateful number for the FCZ since Iulian Filipescu’s championship-winning goal in 2006: 17 years later, a long ball comes into their own penalty area. It looks like the ball will be extended from Aldin Turkes to Nishan Burkart. And he makes it 2-1 for Winterthur. But he is interrupted from his celebration by what appears to be an offside attack. And then the video assistant sees that it was FCZ defender Lindrit Kamberi who played the ball, not Winterthur Turkes.
That’s why the goal counts – and the sold-out Schützenwiese celebrates. Of course with the exception of the many FCZ fans who arrived.
FC Winterthur wins against its cantonal rivals for the first time since 1989. It is also the first win in the league for Patrick Frame’s team since October 22nd. A very important victory after four defeats in a row. This puts the Winterthur team eight points ahead of the direct relegation zone.
FC Zurich, on the other hand, has now lost five points in a few days against Lucerne and Winterthur. The gap to the Young Boys is now four points – and the last game of the year in St. Gallen is still a really difficult one.
Thank you for reading along.
Over, over, the game is over! FC Winterthur wins 2-1 against FC Zurich thanks to a goal in the 93rd minute. It’s crazy what happened in the last few minutes.
The replay shows: It is Kamberi who extends the ball to Burkart. So no offside at goal.
The goal is given! Either it wasn’t offside – or the offside wasn’t given because Kamberi’s head was still slightly on the ball. Doesn’t matter. It’s 2:1 for Winterthur.
Burkart scores – but it is flagged for offside. That’s probably true. It’s very close. But when Turkes’ header is extended, Burkart seems to be further forward than Rohner.
Bo Henriksen, the FCZ coach, who told me yesterday that he had become calmer, sees yellow for complaining.
Reichmuth with a shot from the edge of the penalty area, Keller deflects for a corner.
Four minutes of additional time are shown.
Corbaz replaces goalscorer Stillhart at Winterthur.
Sidler with a daring header return from a few meters to his own goalie. You can do it, but you don’t have to. But Keller has enough presence of mind to catch the ball.
He has hardly been seen so far. But now Santini shoots from the edge of the penalty area with a nice spin. The ball then flies clearly past the Winterthur goal. Looked more dangerous from the side than from the back goal camera.
Nishan Burkart elbows Lindrit Kamberi: yellow.
Nils Reichmuth comes to FCZ for Nikola Boranijasevic.
Lindrit Kamberi takes a corner and calls on the FCZ fans to get even louder. The corner doesn’t help.
As if the teams had read along: Now here’s what’s going on: Immediately after Di Giusto’s chance, Okita shoots from 17 meters. The ball would have landed in the top right corner from the shooter’s perspective. But Keller flies wonderfully and still defends the ball.
Next chance Winterthur: Di Giusto shoots from eleven meters, Brecher makes a great save.
Man oh man! Boranijasevic already claps his hands over his head. The right wing of the FCZ just played the ball directly into the feet of Winterthur striker Aldin Turkes. But Turkes reacts so poorly technically that he doesn’t even finish. Weak of both. Result: no goal, nothing happened.
It is said that if you dare nothing, you gain nothing. Since the break, both teams have done little (FCZ) or nothing (Winterthur). There is a risk that neither will win and will settle for a 1-1 draw.
Adrian Guerrero with a shot from around 18 meters, but right at Keller.
Accidental goalscorer Marchesano leaves FCZ. Fabian Rohner is coming. In addition, Ifeanyi Mathew will be replaced by Bledian Krasniqi.
