FC Volendam – FC Emmen: 0 – 1 (0 – 0)
August 18, 2024 / Kitchen Champion Division
FC Volendam has disappointingly lost the first duel at home to FC Emmen. With a crucial red card for Yannick Leliendal, a stopped penalty by Barry Lauwers and a goal by Jalen Hawkins, FC Volendam lost 0-1 to the team from Emmen.
After an impressive minute of silence, in memory of FC Volendammers who died in the past year, the game could kick off in the familiar Kras Stadium. FC Emmen started the match sharply, because in the first minute striker Franck Evina was sent away with a deep ball. However, his effort was too weak, allowing goalkeeper Barry Lauwers to easily hold on to the ball.
A few minutes later, there was another similar chance for the away team. Jalen Hawkins was sent deep in a counter and came 1 on 1 against Lauwers. Due to a lack of control over the ball, the Volendam keeper was able to intervene and intercept the ball before the winger could take a shot. The first ten minutes of the match were in the hands of FC Emmen.
Volendam opportunities
FC Volendam’s first chance could be noted a little later. After putting good pressure on the right back of FC Emmen, Yannick Leliendal was able to intercept the ball and put Robert Mühren in position via a cross. However, the Volendammer headed onto the roof of the goal.
In the minutes that followed, possession of the ball changed regularly between both teams. There were no major (regular) chances, apart from a disallowed goal. However, this changed after half an hour of play. After a mistake in FC Emmen’s build-up, Alex Plat received the ball in midfield with space to take a shot. From about 25 metres, the Volendammer-born shot, but despite the annoying bounce in the shot, Luca Unbehaun was able to save the ball.
FC Volendam gradually got better into the game. After a chance from Bilal Ould-Chikh, who shot just wide with a good action, and chances from the duo Henk Veerman and Robert Mühren, the 1-0 seemed to be in the air. But the clinical finishing of the chances was lacking, so that both teams went to halftime with a 0-0 score.
Repeat from last week
The match started again and it was important that Rick Kruys’ men would take control of the second half to end the match with a positive result. Although FC Volendam started dominantly in possession, FC Emmen had the chances. With long shots from Kelian Nsona and Torben Rhein, the away team came closest to a lead. In both cases, goalkeeper Lauwers was an obstacle, which meant that the score remained unchanged.
After an hour of play, FC Emmen player Hawkins was sent deep behind the Volendam defence via a high ball. Leliendal was still able to intercept the ball, but not enough. The attacker broke through and Leliendal had to pull the emergency brake. The referee had no choice but to give the Volendam left back a red card and award a penalty to FC Emmen. It was the perfect opportunity for the away team to take the lead, if it weren’t for Lauwers, who had been a strong goalkeeper the entire match, emerging victorious against penalty taker Rhein. FC Volendam could breathe a sigh of relief, but faced a tough final phase with ten men.
Tough task
That it would be a tough task was already apparent a minute later. The previously broken forward Hawkins suddenly got the ball at his feet after Lauwers had saved an earlier attempt by FC Emmen. The winger could easily shoot the ball in: 0 – 1.
Despite the deficit, FC Volendam tried everything to get back into the game. With fresh attacking forces, they played more optimistically, but with one man less, the spaces on the field became bigger and bigger. This made it difficult to play through the defense of FC Emmen. In the final phase, there were still a few small chances for the orange trousers. For example, Mühren was freed in the sixteen, but his effort disappeared over the back line via a defensive leg. FC Volendam could not achieve anything in the final minutes. The first home match thus ended disappointingly in 0 – 1.
ADO Den Haag away
The next match for the Volendam formation is the duel against ADO Den Haag. On Friday 23 August, kick-off will be at 20:00 in the Bingoal Stadium in The Hague.
