FC Volendam Gives ‘Golden Boy’ Bilal Ould-Chikh Fourth Chance: New Season Preparations Begin

FC Volendam has decided to give Bilal Ould-Chikh another chance for the upcoming season, despite his disciplinary issues last season. The 25-year-old attacker was removed from the squad three times for disciplinary reasons, but the club believes he can prove himself again. Director of football affairs, Jasper van Leeuwen, referred to Ould-Chikh as a “golden boy” and stated that he needs to show what he can do, and even better.

Preparations for the new season will begin in less than two weeks, and Ould-Chikh will have the opportunity to learn from his mistakes and improve his attitude. Van Leeuwen mentioned that it is the accumulation of little things that led to his suspensions and the irritation within the club. The exact reasons behind the suspensions remain unclear, although Ould-Chikh denied reports of a scuffle with Matthias Kohler, the former assistant coach who will now be responsible for the upcoming season as the head coach, succeeding Wim Jonk, who will become the technical manager at the club.

Ould-Chikh is currently under contract with FC Volendam until mid-2025. To maintain his commitment, the club expects an improved attitude from him. Van Leeuwen emphasized the need for Ould-Chikh to learn to deal with the challenges of professional football. After a home game against FC Emmen, Jonk described his relationship with Ould-Chikh as a “love-hate relationship” and referred to him as a “hot-tempered type.” However, following the third suspension, Jonk seemed to be done with the player. The club will have a conversation with Ould-Chikh to determine how to proceed.

In addition to Ould-Chikh’s situation, the composition of the team for the upcoming season is still uncertain. Carel Eiting, the team’s captain, is attracting interest from other clubs. Van Leeuwen acknowledged the interest but stated that the conditions for a potential transfer are crucial. Eiting joined Volendam with the understanding that it could be a stepping stone in his career, so blocking a transfer would be unusual. Eiting’s contract runs until mid-2024, with an option to extend for another season.
