FC Twente – FC Volendam: 7 – 2 (5 – 2)
May 12, 2024 / Eredivisie
FC Volendam suffered a hard visit to FC Twente. The game in the Grolsch Veste started rosy, where Damon Mirani twice provided the Volendam lead. In the end, the home team came out on top, raising the score to 7 – 2.
With the returning Xavier Mbuyamba in the starting line-up, FC Volendam was able to sniff a lead within three minutes. Robert Mühren was sent into the depth and finished calmly after beating goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall. However, the striker was offside, so the goal did not go through. Shortly afterwards it did not stop at smelling, but the 0 – 1 actually appeared on the scoreboard. The deep-sent Mühren passed to Mirani, who was able to tap the ball.
Even before the clock ticked ten minutes, FC Twente also had a taste of scoring a goal. However, the goal was also disallowed. But FC Twente also soon knew what it felt like when a goal counts. Ricky van Wolfswinkel was sent into the depth and outwitted Barry Lauwers with a nice lob. Another Volendam opportunity followed after fifteen minutes of football, when Mühren was found in the depths. His effort rolled harmlessly past.
Rain of goals
Shortly afterwards, FC Twente seemed to be awarded a penalty, but – after minutes of VAR review – it was canceled due to offside. The rest of the match also remained crazy, as FC Volendam took the lead again. Mirani was the birthday boy again when he headed in a corner. The lead was again not held for long. Naci Ünüvar was able to score the 2 – 2 from close range.
Twent’s danger remained. After half an hour of football, it was Michal Sadilek who forced Lauwers to make a save. Ultimately, the Tukkers also took the lead. After 38 minutes, Robin Pröpper headed the ball into the goal from a corner via the underside of the crossbar. The lead was further increased before halftime. Youri Regeer cut down two men and scored from the edge of the penalty area to make it 4 – 2. This did not end the misery for FC Volendam. Immediately after the kick-off, Mbuyamba lost the ball, allowing Sem Steijn to score the 5 – 2 goal.
Two Twente goals
The second half started with a double substitution on the Volendam side. Calvin Twigt and Josh Flint entered the field in place of Mbuyamba and Milan de Haan. In contrast to the first half, FC Volendam was now able to keep the gates of the rearguard closed a lot better. After fifteen minutes of playing football in the second half, Darius Johnson had an optimal chance of scoring the Wijdbroeken’s third goal, but he hesitated for too long. This allowed the home team to still win the ball.
After FC Volendam was able to keep the gates closed at the back for a long time, FC Twente finally scored the sixth goal. Sem Steijn was able to head a rebound into the empty goal. After 70 minutes of football the score was 6 – 2. Shortly afterwards, Steijn was also allowed to score his hat trick. The midfielder shot a free kick into the corner. There was a special moment in the second half for Caner Demircioglu. The Jong FC Volendam attacker was allowed to make his debut in the main squad in the last five minutes.
