FC Volendam coach Michael Dingsdag was disappointed on Thursday, but above all proud after the match against Feyenoord. In De Kuip, the visitors only had to bow to the reigning national champions in the 94th minute.
“This is quite sad,” interim coach Dingsdag said in front of the camera after the 3-1 defeat. ESPN. “When you’re so close, with three minutes to play, you hope for a miracle.”
In his first match as interim coach, Dingsdag was very close to a surprising point in De Kuip. The club, plagued by administrative chaos, kept Feyenoord at 1-1 for a long time, until Santiago Giménez headed home in the 94th minute. Then Igor Paixão made it 3-1.
“You are of course heavily pushed back. Then the ball only has to fall well once and they can head in from 5 meters,” said Dingsdag about Giménez’s goal. “We won almost all the matches, but lost one. Then it happened straight away.”

‘They fought for the club’
Despite the defeat, Dingsdag is proud of his team. “They gave everything and fought for each other,” he said. “They fought for the club and went for a result together. They did a fantastic job, but unfortunately it was to no avail.”
Volendam mainly held back in De Kuip and ended the match with only 16 percent ball possession. According to the trainer, there was no other way. “I actually don’t want to play like that,” Dingsdag admitted. “I don’t like to park the bus, but today we did well. I am normally a trainer who attacks.”
FC Volendam may be able to show itself more offensively next week at SC Heerenveen. That will be the last game before the winter break and in principle also the last game of Dingsdag. It is not yet clear who will be the trainer at FC Volendam after the winter break, which is fighting against relegation.
