FC Twente won 1-0 against SC Heerenveen at home on Saturday. Nota bene Fries Michel Vlap scored the only goal of the match. Earlier in the day, Almere City won 0-2 at FC Utrecht, which was the first victory ever in the Eredivisie for the Almere team, who are making their debut at the highest level.
Both teams certainly did not make a spectacle of it in Enschede. FC Twente had much more than the ball than Heerenveen, but did not do much with it. The halftime score of 0-0 was logical given the poor game.
After tea, FC Twente coach Josep Oosting brought an extra playmaker into the team in the form of Carel Eiting and this had an effective effect. Twente midfielder Michal Sadilek shot on goal and immediately afterwards a shot from Patrik Walemark went wide on the other side. A goal by Heerenveen player Luuk Brouwers was disallowed for offside.
After more than an hour of playing, Vlap broke the ban. De Fries – who went through Heerenveen’s youth academy and played 59 matches in the first team – scored from a distance. The attempt went straight through the middle, but was still too powerful for Heerenveen goalie Andries Noppert. As has often been the case in recent weeks, the Dutch international made a glaring mistake.
SC Heerenveen then brought Syb van Ottele, Anas Tahiri and Ion Nicolaescu onto the field, in the hope of preventing the fifth defeat in a row. But the substitutes could not force the equalizer. The Frisians slide to thirteenth place in the Eredivisie due to the defeat. Twente is third.
Almere takes its first ever win in the Eredivisie
Earlier in the day, Almere won a match in the Eredivisie for the first time. In Utrecht, the home team started the match strongly, with a great chance for Mats Seuntjens in the 27th minute. The striker saw his attempt turned away by Almere City goalkeeper Nordin Bakker.
Just before half time, the visitors were close to the opening goal, but captain Damian van Bruggen’s header went over the crossbar over the Utrecht goal. Just after half time it was Seuntjens again with the chance for Utrecht, but the ball went wide.
Utrecht, which was longing for a victory, then found it difficult in De Galgenwaard. In the 63rd minute, the home team found itself with one man less, after Hugo Novoa Ramos received his second yellow card.
The match seemed to end in a draw, but ten minutes before the end, Thomas Robinet headed in the opening goal on behalf of Almere out of reach of Vasilios Barkas. In the 89th minute, Rajiv van La Parra plunged De Galgenwaard into mourning by scoring the 0-2.
The headaches continue for Utrecht coach Ron Jans. The Domstedelingen only have three points after seven games and are seventeenth in the Eredivisie. Almere City rises to fifteenth place due to the victory.
