sc Heerenveen lost to FC Twente on Tuesday night in De Grolsch Veste. The team of coach Robin van Persie had to bow to a penalty and a magnificent bicycle kick by Sem Steijn (2-0).
In the first half, FC Twente had the initiative. In the 22nd minute, the home team was awarded a penalty after VAR intervention. Referee Serdar Gözübüyük was pointed out by his colleague in Zeist to a foul by Mickey van der Hart on Sam Lammers. Although Lammers initially shot the ball wide and the contact only occurred afterwards, the referee decided to award a penalty: Sem Steijn took advantage of the opportunity (1-0).
Just before half-time, Van der Hart saved a half-volley from Steijn, but not much later the Twente midfielder repeated this feat – it must be said – in a brilliant manner and left the SC Heerenveen goalkeeper with no chance (2-0).
After the break, sc Heerenveen tried to regain the initiative and both teams had a few chances. Mitchell van Bergen scored, but did so from an offside position. On the other side, Jacob Trenskow came close to the connecting goal with a shot on the post. Ilias Sebaoui also became dangerous, but saw his attempt end up on the boot of FC Twente goalie Lars Unnerstall.
In the final quarter, Robin van Persie’s team kept trying bravely, but no more goals were scored. On Sunday, the Frisians will get another chance at home. FC Groningen will visit for the Derby of the North (kick-off: 12:15).
