Hamburg – The omens would have been before the game between the FC St. Pauli and SV Wehen Wiesbaden couldn’t be clearer. A top team welcomes a newcomer. This is exactly how you can summarize the last 90 minutes of “Millerntor football” in 2023. Although there was almost a noticeable class difference, Wiesbaden stole a point from Hamburg, the final score was 1:1 (0:0).

The 1st half: Wrong decisions cost goals

As is so often the case, St. Pauli started the encounter with a lot of control. After almost a quarter of an hour, Saad opened the firework of opportunities. Afterwards: opportunities abound. In the 18th minute, Hartel was free in front of the SVWW goal after a great combination. However, the midfield engine pushed the ball past the goal. Only a short time later it was the striking Saad who had the next chance for the home team. Wiesbaden defended passionately, the hosts were either unlucky in finishing or made the wrong decisions in the final third.

After the break: Joker comes out of nowhere

Good morning, Wiesbaden. The guests appeared to still be in the cabin when Marcel Hartel (47th) marked 1-0. The Brown-Whites’ top scorer was free in front of the box after great preparatory work from Eggestein. His shot deflected slightly and landed in the goal. Just seven minutes later, captain Irvine had a great opportunity to score a double, but this was thwarted by the “superhuman” Florian Stritzel. It was only in the 74th minute that the Hessians realized that football was being played in Hamburg today. The guests’ first conclusion was made John Iredale hit the crossbar, but he didn’t have to wait long for his goal. Six minutes before the end, the striker shocked the Kiezkickers and silenced the Millerntor. Metcalfe and Hartel then had great chances, but there was no getting past the SVWW keeper.

The conclusion: not a broken leg but a huge disappointment

The third draw in a row is not (yet) a broken leg for FC St. Pauli, as they are still in second place over the winter 2. Bundesliga. The way these draws happen is just extremely unfortunate. Against Wiesbaden they had 71 percent possession of the ball, shot 21 more times on goal than the opponent and failed too often because of Stritzel. The bottom line is that the break will be good, because there was simply a lack of coolness in the last few games. The “Boys in Brown” have been told once again if you don’t score the goals at the front…

The trainer voices

Fabian Hürzeler (FC St. Pauli): “We were really good from the start today. We were very dominant and had very good positional play. Against a low-lying opponent, we also managed to create dynamism and keep getting behind the chain. We were able to create some very good chances to score and did a very good job of defending. We rewarded ourselves with the 1-0 win and continued to consistently go for the second goal. In football it’s sometimes the case that you get punished for little things. We have to blame ourselves for not managing to keep a clean sheet once again. That’s actually what makes us strong. That is also our identity, we missed it.”

Markus Kauczinski (SV Wehen Wiesbaden): “Feeling like we were better at it. We always had a counterattack. In one situation or another we had a good goalkeeper. With all of St. Pauli’s chances, we often got our foot in the way and defended with heart and passion. I take my hat off to my team for how they fought. John Iredale has incredible power. He already had the shot on the crossbar and used his power to equalize. We fought for it, which you also have to achieve first. I’m proud of the team for what they put in today.”
