Osnabrück – At FC St. Pauli things aren’t going so smoothly anymore. This time there was only a 1-1 (1-0) draw on Saturday 2. Bundesliga at bottom team VfL Osnabrück. It was the second draw in a row for the leaders. However, the lead in the table remains, regardless of how Holstein Kiel performs at Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday.

The 1st half: Irvine prepares to take the lead itself

After Homburg’s cup success, the guests changed their starting eleven to four positions. In addition to goalkeeper Vasilj, Afolayan, Saliakas and Saad were allowed to play from the start. Instead, Amenyido, Burchert, Metcalfe and Ritzka sat on the bench. After just six minutes, the brown and white team went ahead. Hartel headed a corner Jackson Irvine, which he previously took out himself, into the left corner of the goal. That gave security for the league leaders, who dominated the game. Double chance for VfL: First, Vasilj cleared a corner that was hit directly at the goal with his foot and was a bit lucky with the following shot from Rorig (21′) that it missed wide. Opposite, Saad (26th) missed the next goal with a header from an Eggestein cross. He put the ball just wide. The Hamburg team didn’t make more use of their advantage in the first round.

After the break: Hamburg’s passivity costs points

In the second half, Saad caused the first disturbance in the Osnabrück penalty area. In the 48th minute he hit the side netting. The home side became more dangerous. The Hamburg native Conteh (56th) – formerly in the employ of the Kiezkicker (youth and second team) – got through, but was interrupted by the Mets just in time in front of the penalty area. Engelhardt (57th), who was brought into the scene by Tesche but could not get the ball under control, had the great opportunity to equalize. The dangerous scenes in the away penalty area increased. An Engelhardt cross (73′) directed Vasilj onto the crossbar and towards the corner. Five minutes later, the Pauli keeper just got his arms up and sensationally blocked a shot from Cuisance. The 1:1 was in the air and the leaders were wobbling at the bottom of the table. And then it fell, in the 82nd minute it left Charalambos Makridis ring. Conteh prepared after a cross from Engelhardt. The goalscorer pushed a shot from six meters into the left corner to equalize. Now VfL wanted more and the Hürzeler team did better again. There was an exciting final phase in which Osnabrück’s Niklas Wiemann (93′) received a yellow-red card for an emergency stop in front of his own 16 against Maurides. VfL goalkeeper Kühn just managed to direct the following free kick from Hartel towards a corner. And that was it for this game.

The conclusion: Kiez engine stutters

One can assume that the “Boys in Brown” were easily planning an away win against the bottom team in the table. But the Osnabrück team worked their way into the game and fell behind early on. A very good first half was followed by a very weak second half from Hamburg. That wouldn’t have been necessary because there were enough opportunities to decide the match early on. You can dismiss something like this as a “lost two points” and have to be careful not to fall into a whirlpool of happiness just because you dream of promotion. At Hansa Rostock they were leading 3-1, but were shaking their way to a 3-2 win. Against HSV they were ahead by two goals and shared the points, and in Osnabrück they were again unable to take the lead at halftime.
