FC Porto Reaches Champions League Round of 16 as Runners-Up: Potential Opponents and Challenges Ahead

Contrary to what happened last season, FC Porto reached the round of 16 of the Champions League as runners-up in the group, which means, in theory, a more complicated opponent in the knockout round.

In the draw scheduled for Monday, the Dragons have as their chances three Spanish teams (Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid and Real Sociedad), two English teams (Manchester City and Arsenal) and two German teams (Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund), only escaping the Barcelona among the group winners, having faced the Catalan team in the phase that has now come to an end.

On paper, Real Sociedad will be the most attractive rival, although the Basques have shown in the group where Benfica was also present that they have a high quality team. Atlético de Madrid, who Porto faced in the group stage two years ago and last season, Arsenal, who hadn’t been to the Champions League for several years (they were eliminated by Sporting in the Europa League last season) and Borussia Dortmund are clubs powerful, but not at the level of “sharks” like Real Madrid, Bayern and City, the current European champion.

In the FC Porto pot, and therefore prevented from entering the draw, there will also be Inter, PSG, Lazio, Leipzig, Copenhagen, Napoli and PSV.
