For the third consecutive game – after the 5-0 victories over Benfica and 3-0 over Portimonense – Sérgio Conceição bet on exactly the same eleven, which has given such a good account of itself. This time, however, the dragons saw their opponent come in better. Determined to recover from the deficit in the tie at the Estádio do Dragão, Arsenal threatened early, after just four minutes. It was worth a big cut from Wendell, disarming Saka, who was dangerously heading down the central corridor. Following the move, White headed over.

Until the quarter of an hour, Odegaard and Saka, twice, also created danger for FC Porto’s goal, but after the quarter of an hour the Portuguese team began to react and create danger, too. Evanilson started by shooting wide after Saliba’s incomplete cut and, shortly afterwards, forced the Arsenal goalkeeper to have to apply himself to keep the score goalless. Then, Wendell also tried his luck.

Goal to close the first half equals the tie

At that point, the match was still balanced – even when it came to ball possession – but little by little Arsenal started to grow again. At the half-hour mark, Pepe made a great cut to prevent the ball from reaching Kay Havertz, who would have had everything to score. Then, a good combination between Saka and Kai Havertz ended up in the hands of Diogo Costa.

The minutes passed and half-time approached when Arsenal scored. Odegaard captured the ball after a cut by Wendell, combined with Trossard and the latter, in front of Diogo Costa, shot low for the Arsenal goal, tying the tie on the brink of half-time.

Dragons breathe a sigh of relief with goal disallowed

The second half began with Arsenal, motivated by their advantage in the match, showing greater aggression in duels, but the first team to create danger was FC Porto, with an acrobatic shot by Evanilson.

Arsenal were dominating, but the Dragons were managing to prevent their opponent from creating really dangerous moves, although they were quite shocked when they saw the ball go into the back of Diogo Costa’s net again. Odegaard shot accurately, but the shot was canceled due to an offensive foul by Kai Havertz on Pepe at the beginning of the play.

FC Porto breathed a sigh of relief, who shortly afterwards threatened the goal, with a shot by Francisco Conceição for a tight defense by Raya.

Diogo Costa postpones decision, Arsenal stronger on penalties

The final quarter of an hour of the second half then saw great pressure from Arsenal and in the 83rd minute only a great intervention by Diogo Costa prevented the Gunners from scoring. Ball lost by Otávio in the area, Gabriel Jesus recovered, but in the face of the Portuguese goalkeeper he was unable to score.

It was the closest either team came to scoring until the end of the 90 minutes and, with the tie tied, the match went to extra time. There, with the tiredness evident in the players of both teams, there were few or no chances to score in either goal and the 120 minutes arrived without any further changes to the scoreboard.

Everything to be decided on penalties, where Wendell was the first to fail, with the ball hitting the Arsenal goal post. On the Gunners’ side, no one failed, before Raya saved FC Porto’s final penalty, taken by Galeno, sealing the qualification of the current Premier League leaders for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
