FC Porto Demotes David Carmo to Team B: Most Expensive Deal in Portuguese Clubs History Fails to Meet Expectations

He arrived at Dragão in July 2022 and carried out the most expensive deal between Portuguese clubs. However, after some less successful performances – and problems outside the public eye –, the Porto structure decided to “demote” David Carmo to team B, and it is now up to the Portuguese central defender to once again claim status in the “blue and white” squad, or else , wait for a loan or transfer in the winter market.

This decision came from the Porto coach, Sérgio Conceição, and had as a “final straw” the recording of an incident at the Olival training center. This Thursday, FC Porto confirmed Carmo’s removal from the main squad due to “inappropriate behavior”.

“This decision was taken in concert by the administration and the Football Department following inappropriate behavior by David Carmo”, can be read in the newsletter club fee.

David Carmo was the Porto players’ first reinforcement for the 2022-23 season and cost the “blue and white” coffers 20 million euros – a value that would rise to 22.5 million, if some sporting objectives were achieved. The central defender was sold by Sp. Braga and joined Sérgio Conceição’s team to fill a vital place in the defense. The Porto players made a considerable investment in signing the player, which became the most expensive transfer ever between two Portuguese clubs.

Before David Carmo, Rafa (16.4 million) and Paulinho (16 million for 75% of the pass) were the protagonists of the most expensive deals between Portuguese clubs. Three deals between Sp. Braga and the “big three”, but, in the case of the Porto central defender, the bet seems, at least for now, not to be having the desired effects.

In the 2019-20 season, David Carmo had a meteoric rise in Braga, rising from the under-23s to the main squad in the I League. He was curiously launched by the current coach of the “lions”, Rúben Amorim, but a serious ankle injury suffered in February 2021 forced a pause in the central defender’s affirmation in the “warriors”. The recovery process was long and David Carmo would even give up his holiday period to work on his physical aspect, contrary to pessimistic predictions that indicated a late return to football.

From this Thursday onwards he will be under the orders of António Folha, coach of FC Porto’s B team. The Porto players occupy 7th place in the Pro League, facing Nacional da Madeira on December 30th.
