FC Meppel Advances to Grand Final of Protos Weering Indoor Football Tournament

INDOOR FOOTBALL – FC Meppel has qualified as the sixth club for the final of the Protos Weering Indoor Football Tournament tonight. In the intermediate round, the Meppel third division team on Saturday was too strong for SVBO, Valthermond, Raptim and Germanicus.

The decision ultimately came in the penultimate game of the evening in the Angelslo sports hall in Emmen, when the two remaining contenders – FC Meppel and Valthermond – faced each other. Prior to that ‘final’, both teams had seven points from three matches, but FC Meppel had a better goal difference and was therefore allowed to draw. And that happened. Camiel Fidom scored early for the green and white and despite Valthermond’s lightning-fast 1-1 (via Mike Wilts), the blue and white did not progress. The biggest chance was for one of the best players of the evening (Valthermond goalkeeper Joost Schrik), but his effort – during a surplus situation – was beaten out of the intersection in the exciting final phase by the excellent goalkeeper of FC Meppel: Erik Kampherbeek.

FC Meppel could celebrate and that was largely due to the great 3-0 win over SVBO. Last year’s winner started the evening as a favorite, but finished 3rd with 6 points from 4 matches and therefore eighth in the final rankings.

Valthermond finished, with as many points as FC Meppel, undefeated second of the evening and seventh overall. The team of coach Kenny Koning only lost once in the entire tournament, in the quarter-final group in Zwartemeer van Drenthina (3-4).

The battle for 4th and 5th place in the intermediate round became a Coevorder match between Raptim and Germanicus and was settled by the Sunday second division team. Raptim, which lost clumsily to Valthermond in the second game of the evening (despite having one more man on the field, saw a 1-1 score change into a 1-2 defeat) and was therefore eliminated from a place in the final, lost 2-0. As a result, Germanicus finished this edition of the Protos Weering Indoor Football Tournament in 9th and Raptim in 10th.

Hoogeveen Sunday, HZVV, Gramsbergen, Noordscheschut, LTC and therefore FC Meppel will compete on Saturday to win the 45th edition of the Protos Weering Indoor Football Tournament. Of course, the grand final can be seen live on TV Drenthe and online. The broadcast starts at 11:25 am.
