FC Luzern has a dark evening in Bern and goes down 6-1 against YB. This means that we can now definitely speak of a Wankdorf curse.

The first chance of the game belonged to Frydek, who put a promising free kick just wide of the goal. Just two minutes later there was a free kick on the other side from an almost identical position: Elia did better and hit the left corner precisely to give YB the lead.

The home team was extremely efficient in this starting phase. After just thirteen minutes, the Bernese scored their second goal. A cross pass reached Males, who finished successfully. After twenty minutes had been played, the FCL had an opportunity to score. Again it was a standard situation, this time Meyer put the ball too high.

FCL was awarded a penalty after half an hour after Chader was laid down in the penalty area. Max Meyer took responsibility and safely reduced the score to 1:2. Five minutes before the half-time whistle there was a huge chance to equalize. Meyer passed the ball to Okou, who narrowly missed the goal. With the very last action before the half-time whistle, the Bernese restored their two-goal lead. Meschak Elia penetrated the penalty area and scored his second goal.

Nicky Beloko had the first high-profile chance of the second half. After a combination of Okou and Chader, Beloko finished from close range, but was parried by a sensational reflex from Racioppi. Shortly afterwards, Chader broke into the penalty area, but his attempt was deflected into a corner. After an hour, Loretz was able to distinguish himself after a remarkable shot from Itten.

Minutes later, referee Tschudi awarded a penalty after Jaquez fouled Nsame. Ganvoulas, who had just come on as a substitute, took the penalty and converted with great precision to make it 4-1. It got even more bitter… In the 73rd and 75th minutes respectively, the home team scored goals five and six. No further goals were scored and the game ended in a clear defeat against the league leaders.

FCL coach Mario Frick said about the game in the “Luzerner Zeitung”: “I looked at the scoreboard several times. But there is actually a six there. Overall it was a good performance from us. It’s a brutal result. The smallest detail has to be right against YB. And we made too many mistakes. But it’s definitely not a setback for us.”
