FC Groningen lost to Go Ahead Eagles, 0-1, on Sunday afternoon in Euroborg. At halftime it was still 0-0. After the break, Oliver Edvardsen scored the only goal of the afternoon. Maxim Mariani came on as a substitute in the second half. The debut in professional football for the FC defender from his own training.
The guests from Deventer had the best chances before half time. Former FC player Oliver Antman had the opportunity to put FC Groningen behind within 2 minutes, but Etienne Vaessen shot over eye to eye. After fifteen minutes of play, Jacob Breum got the second good chance for Go Ahead Eagles and was well blocked close to the goal by Leandro Bacuna and Thijmen Blokzijl.
FC Groningen seemed to take the lead halfway through the first half. Stije Resink won the ball in midfield and put Romano Postema away. The striker finished coolly at speed, but was again flagged for offside. After an extra check by the VAR, the millimeter work turned out to be to the disadvantage of the FC striker. Antman got his second chance to score again in Euroborg after half an hour of play, but was unable to control a high cross at the far post well enough to slide the ball into the empty goal. That made it 0-0 at halftime.
The FC got out of the starting blocks energetically in the second half. Joey Pelupessy came on for Resink immediately after the break. Luciano Valente rushed past his opponent within 20 seconds and shot dangerously wide. The guests also quickly got a chance. Vaessen made a catty save on a free kick from about 18 meters from the goal from Breum’s foot.
After more than an hour of play, the Pride of the North brought Rui Mendes and Thijs Oosting in front of Postema and Jorg Schreuders. Just like FC Groningen, Go Ahead Eagles also saw a goal disallowed due to offside. Once again it was a matter of millimeters after Gerrit Nauber had headed in, but this time in favor of the FC.
Oliver Edvardsen put the FC behind fifteen minutes before the end from a rebound from close to the goal. Vaessen was able to stop a shot from Breum, but had no chance when the substitute put in, 0-1. The VAR also looked at this goal for a possible offside moment, but the goal was approved.
In the hunt for the equalizer, the FC failed to create any really good chances. Noam Emeran was brought on ten minutes before the end, as was Maxim Mariani. For the defender from the FC Groningen Academy, it meant his debut in professional football. Just before the end, goalscorer Edvardsen shot the post again out of Vaessen’s reach. There were 22,040 supporters in Euroborg on Sunday.
