Saarbrücken / Gronig. They stand for health, inclusion, integration as well as a sense of community and appreciation of voluntary commitment: the “Stars of Sports” awards from the nationwide competition of the same name.
These “Stars of Sports” are awarded every year to sports clubs at state and federal level that are committed to helping local people. The competition is organized by the Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken as well as the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and its state sports associations.
There was now a lot of honor and praise for six sports clubs from Saarland, which made it to the final round of the competition at state level among 17 competitors. They were honored with the Silver Sports Stars at a festive awards ceremony in the Saarland State Chancellery. The awards were presented by Prime Minister Anke Relinger, Reinhold Jost, Minister for the Interior, Building and Sport, Helmut Scharff, board member of Bank 1 Saar and Johannes Kopkow, board member of the State Sports Association for Saarland (LSVS).
The first winner and recipient of the “Great Star of Sports in Silver” is the club FC Gronig 1926, which organized a sports camp for primary school children as part of a merger of several clubs from Oberthal. The sports club DJK Saarlouis-Roden (2nd place) and the LAZ Saarbrücken club (3rd place) were each awarded a “Small Star of Sports in Silver”. The clubs BC Lucky Punch Saarbrücken, FV 08 Püttlingen and SC Wemmatia Wemmetsweiler also received sponsorship awards.
The expert jury awarded a total of 6,500 euros in prize money. FC Gronig now has the chance to take part in the decision at federal level and win gold for Saarland: either the “Great Star of Sport” in gold or one of the other stars in gold.
These will then be awarded as federal prizes by Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on January 29, 2024. red./dt
