FC Emmen believes that acquisition Desley Ubbink deserves a second chance after his conviction for sex with a minor. The club received a lot of criticism for the transfer and for trying to cover up his past.
Ubbink received a community service order of 160 hours in 2015 because he had sex with a fourteen-year-old girl two years earlier. The footballer was then twenty years old. Just before the transfer, a club communications officer tried to hide Ubbink’s past online by adjusting the footballer’s Wikipedia page.
After the commotion that had arisen, FC Emmen spoke with Ubbink about the matter. “Desley has indicated that he would like to create clarity”, the First Divisionist reports in an statement. “When he was still living in the Netherlands, he met a girl in the nightlife and met her a number of times. This happened voluntarily on both sides.”
After the transfer from Ubbink to the Kazakh FK Taraz, a report was filed. “He then received community service for the fact that the girl in question was a minor. That, of course, remains an offense and he accepted that punishment.”

‘We are now ten years further’
According to FC Emmen, Ubbink was young and naive at the time. “He regrets what happened. We are now ten years later and he shares his life with his girlfriend and their daughter. We think Desley deserves a chance with us and can strengthen us.”
General manager Rinse Bleeker previously acknowledged the opposite RTV Drenthe that an employee had tried to erase the conviction on Wikipedia. “An attempt was made to do something without malicious intent. That was ill-considered and should not have been. It has been spoken and that is the end of it.”
FC Emmen relegated from the Eredivisie last season after losing to Almere City in the play-offs. The team of the new trainer Fred Grim starts the new season on Friday with an away match against SC Cambuur.
