FC Copenhagen advances to Champions League round of 16 with 1-0 victory over Galatasaray; Manchester United out in shocking upset

Danish FC Copenhagen is sensationally through to the round of 16 in the Champions League.

The success was completed via a 1–0 victory against Galatasaray.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are completely out of Europe after finishing last in the group.

Swedish national team profile Johan Elmander was on site at the Park in Copenhagen to cheer on his old club Galatasaray in the CL drama.

But Elmander was not allowed to rejoice.

On the other hand, Viktor Claesson, Jordan Larsson and Roony Bardghji had to do that, as their FC Copenhagen succeeded in what no one thought was possible in advance.

Although they ended up in an extremely difficult group on paper with Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Galatasaray, they advanced to the round of 16.

– It is absolutely incredible. They didn’t think so. The goal was to be third so you can play in the Europa League and now we take second place in this group, it’s a bit surreal, says Viktor Claesson to TV4.

“Incredible”

The success was completed via a 1–0 victory in the evening’s directly decisive match against Galatasaray.

Lukas Lerager scored the only goal of the match in the 58th minute.

– It’s “pisse fedt”, says Lerager on TV4 afterwards.

– Our journey in the Champions League just gets better and better. Of course, it feels incredible to decide a match like this.

Fiasco for United

In parallel with this, Manchester United went on a new slap in the face when they lost 0-1 against Bayern Munich, who had already finished Group Ten, at home at Old Trafford.

This means that you finish last in the group and do not even get to play further in the Europa League.

And as if that wasn’t bad enough, they also suffered two new injuries when Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were forced out.

Not optimal, as a heavyweight meeting against Liverpool awaits this weekend.

– We have to keep fighting, says manager Erik ten Hag to TV4.

When asked if he has the energy to continue, he replies:

– More than ever!
