Thomas Tuchel made two changes to FC Bayern Munich’s starting eleven compared to the 2-1 win in Wolfsburg before Christmas – Joshua Kimmich and Matthijs de Ligt started for Aleksandar Pavlovic (bench) and Minjae Kim (Asian Cup). It was the Dutchman’s first start since the cup loss in Saarbrücken at the beginning of November, when he was eliminated injured after 24 minutes.
At TSG Hoffenheim, after the 3-3 draw against Darmstadt, Pellegrino Matarazzo brought on Stanley Nsoki for the recently departed Kevin Vogt, Florian Grillitsch for John Anthony Brooks and Maximilian Beier and Wout Weghorst for Umut Tohumcu and Ihlas Bebou.

Musiala takes the lead
After a slower opening phase in which both teams lacked finishing quality and precision in the final pass, Jamal Musiala gave the home team the lead with Bayern’s first shot on goal. After a short corner, Leroy Sané passed through to the right of the box for the dribbling artist, and he put the ball into the goal from three meters away and at an acute angle over the left inside post (1-0, 18th). This meant that the Munich team scored at least one goal in the 65th Bundesliga home game in a row – a new Bundesliga record!

Hoffenheim, who were just waiting for a counterattack in the first half, now retreated even further. The guests only signaled danger with a volley from Andrej Kramarić (39′). Bayern let the ball run with 65 percent possession without creating any further big chances. It remained shots from a distance: Dayot Upamecano (41′) missed the goal and Kimmich (45′) into the arms of TSG keeper Oliver Baumann missed the target.

Musiala strikes again in Hoffenheim’s pressure phase
The second half, however, was considerably more entertaining. Musiala first shook the right post in the 59th minute with a shot from 20 meters. Immediately afterwards, Konrad Laimer was denied by Baumann, who parried hard, from close range (60′). He was also there for Alphonso Davies’ long-range shot (60′).

Then the game threatened to tip over from Munich’s point of view: Maximilian Beier won the aerial duel against Harry Kane after a header from Ozan Kabak, but found his master in celebratory Manuel Neuer (500th competitive game for Bayern) (63rd). Immediately afterwards, Neuer was there again against Kramaric (64th). Beier then should have made it 1-1, but he put a ball out of the air seven meters away from the goal but only hit the crossbar (66th)!
But Bayern wouldn’t be Bayern if they hadn’t struck in the middle of their opponent’s pressure phase: Musiala took a great vertical pass from Upamecano in front of the box, passed it out to Sané on the left and he gave the ball back to his national team colleague – Musiala pushed easily to make it 2-0 (70th). At the latest with Grischa Prömel’s yellow-red card (74th), the home team had the three points in the bag. Shortly before the end, Kane put the lid on it with his left hand from twelve meters (3-0, 90th). The Englishman equaled Robert Lewandowski’s record from his record season 2020/21 (22 goals, 41 at the end).
