FC Bayern: Manuel Neuer extends his contract

This contract extension came faster than expected. At least if you followed Manuel Neuer’s words.

On Sunday, before the 2-0 victory at Union Berlin, board boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made a meaningful contribution to the contract negotiations with the Bayern captain Sky explained:

“We are in good discussions. I am cautiously optimistic that Manuel will promptly accept FC Bayern’s offer. Both parties know what they have in common, which is why it is a marriage that will continue in the future.”

After the final whistle, Neuer sounded much more defensive: “I think Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is in the picture. There is nothing to be announced at the moment, and I will stick to it. There is no ultimatum. We are both optimistic, but it is still at all nothing clear. “

Neuer extends on Wednesday until 2023

On Wednesday afternoon, three days later, FC Bayern officially announced that the 34-year-old had extended his 2021 expiry by two more years.

A decision that did not come as a surprise to the management of future challenger Alexander Nübel. Because Nübel and his adviser already knew in their negotiations with Bavaria that Neuer would extend and that it would result in a contract by 2023.

Now it’s fixed: Bayer remains new!

To SPORT1-Information, both sides agreed at the beginning of May about the contract extension. Already had in December last year SPORT1 reported that Neuer will extend to 2023.

This was followed by turbulent weeks: the announcement of Alexander Nübel’s change in January and the SPORT1– Revealing that the Noch-Schalke stakes are guaranteed in writing from the coming season.

Personnel Flick was important to Neuer

A significant accelerator in new poker, however, was the contract extension with Bayern head coach Hansi Flick in early April. A short time later, it can be heard from Neuer’s environment, the discussions with Bayern became more specific.

The national goalkeeper had already made it clear in the winter training camp in Doha / Qatar that he was significantly linking his future to that of Flick, who was still an interim coach at the time.

A short ice age is said to have existed between the two parties in mid-April. Because Neuer was annoyed that it had leaked from the contract negotiations, that he was supposed to have requested a contract by 2025 and an annual salary of over 20 million euros per year.

In an interview with the BILD on Sunday Neuer and his advisor Thomas Kroth then got hold of the media and complained, among other things, that they were not valued. Rummenigge then responded publicly with conciliatory words. Both sides are said to have spoken and closed again behind closed doors.

Goalkeeper coach Tapalovic is also allowed to stay

The Corona crisis has dominated the headlines for the past few weeks, which is why Neuer and the club have agreed that the contract extension will only be announced once the game has started to pick up speed again.

“In the weeks of the shutdown as a result of the corona pandemic, I didn’t want to make a decision because nobody knew whether, when and how Bundesliga football would continue at all,” the four-time goalkeeper can now be quoted by the club.

Now he will stay with Bayern for at least another two years. Also because he can continue to work with his goalkeeper trainer Toni Tapalovic, whose working paper was only valid until 2021.

“Now that this has been resolved, I look to the future with great optimism,” says Neuer: “I feel very comfortable and at home in Bavaria. FC Bayern is and remains one of the top European addresses for football.”
