Next award for Robert Lewandowski: After the world football elections, the Bayern Munich goalscorer also won the vote of the Polish press agency Polska Agencja Prasowa (PAP) for “Europe’s Sportsman of the Year”.

In the vote, Lewandowski prevailed with 180 points ahead of Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton (176). Pole vaulting star Armand Duplantis (169) and the two tennis professionals Novak Djokovic (85) and Rafael Nadal (72) took the other places.

Ranks six and seven went to the cycling duo Primoz Roglic (64) and Tadej Pogacar (52), who caused a sensation on this year’s tour. NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo (42) took 8th place in the vote. French Open winner Iga Swiatek (32) and cross-country skier Therese Johaug (28) completed the top 10.

For the 63rd time, the PAP organized the election, in which a total of 25 European news agencies can cast their votes.

Lewandowski is only the third Polish athlete in history to win the election. Before him, the feat of former world-class runner Irena Szewinska (1966, 1974) and athlete Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiak, who won the first vote in 1958, succeeded.

Steffi Graf (1988, 1989), Michael Schumacher (2001, 2002, 2003), Sebastian Vettel (2012, 2013) and Michael Groß (1984) were also able to perpetuate themselves in the list of winners. Last year Lewis Hamilton secured the title. It was the second award for the seven-time world champion after 2014.

The record winner is Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer. The 39-year-old is the most decorated sports star with five awards for “Europe’s Sportsman of the Year” (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009).
