There were certainly more easily earned points for FC Bayern than these three against 1. FC Köln. The guests – well adjusted by their trainer Steffen Baumgart and driven again and again – made it very difficult for the record champions and did not give up even after setbacks. “We lost a game that we shouldn’t have lost,” said Baumgart afterwards at DAZN. “That annoys me, but not the performance. I think it was a great game for everyone.” At the end of the “great game” there was a close 3-2 for Bayern, which must be booked as a work victory. The first half, before there was a minute of silence in honor of the recently deceased Bayern striker Gerd Müller, was a tough struggle. Only rarely have the Munich team been able to work their way up against uncomfortable and viciously defending Cologne chances.
It was only shortly after the break that Robert Lewandowski made it 1-0. A short time later, Serge Gnabry increased, but Cologne came back and equalized with a one-two punch. Bayern had to rally briefly, but then continued their attack efforts. In the end it was Gnabry again who made the decision with a powerful direct shot from about 15 meters goal distance. For Julian Nagelsmann it was the first Bundesliga victory with Bayern. “The result was good, the game was way too wild,” he said, speaking of “parallels to the Gladbach game”. “But the mentality was definitely right and in the end football is a result sport – probably more at Bayern than anywhere else.”
Leipzig wins, Dortmund stumbles
The result was also right for the self-proclaimed “Bayern hunter” RB Leipzig, who opened the matchday on Friday evening with a brilliant 4-0 win against VfB Stuttgart. The match winner was Dominik Szoboszlai, who contributed two beautiful long-range goals to the success of the Leipzig team.
On the other hand, there were sinister expressions at Borussia Dortmund. After the successful start to the season against Eintracht Frankfurt, this time there was a bitter 1: 2 defeat at SC Freiburg. “We had to work a lot for goal chances,” admitted a BVB coach Marco Rose and complained about the early deficit due to a dream free kick from Vincenzo Grifo.

“If you have to run after and don’t score an easy goal, it will be difficult. So we lost 2-1,” said Rose. In fact, Erling Haaland and Co. remained without a goal of their own: The goal for Dortmund was an own goal by Freiburg’s Yannik Keitel. After losing the Supercup against FC Bayern, it was Dortmund’s second bankruptcy in a row.
Bayer Leverkusen shows what it can do
Gerardo Seoane celebrated a perfect home premiere in the Bundesliga in Leverkusen. The new coach deservedly won 4-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach with Bayer 04 Leverkusen. “We got off to a strong start. We controlled the game after the early goals,” said Werkself goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, who saved a penalty against Lars Stindl. “The performance was right.”

In addition to the sobering result, the Gladbachers were annoyed by several failures. Stefan Lainer broke his ankle when the opponent fouled. Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea were substituted off with knee injuries. Matthias Ginter, who had a cold, had to go down with circulatory problems.
Hertha BSC was also frustrated. For the second time in the second game of the season, the Berliners lost a lead and lost 2-1 to VfL Wolfsburg, the new league leaders in the Bundesliga.
Bochums Holtmann with “Goal of the Year”
In Bochum, the team and fans showed what the league can expect from the promoted team this season: euphoria and passionate footballers. The highlight of the 2-0 win against FSV Mainz 05 was the opening goal by Gerrit Holtmann. The ex-Mainz completed a solo run over half the course with a tunnel through the Mainz goalkeeper’s legs. Bochum’s stadium announcer spontaneously proclaimed the goal “Goal of the Year”. “It was a deserved victory for Bochum,” said Mainz sports director Martin Schmidt frankly on Sky.

The game association Greuther Fürth, the other promoted team, however, missed his first win of the season. Against Arminia Bielefeld, who played undernumbered after the yellow-red card for Alessandro Schöpf from the middle of the second half, there was a 1-1. There was also a division of points in Hoffenheim, where TSG separated from Union Berlin 2-2.
