The scene of the game
It was the 31st minute of the classic between FC Basel and FC Zurich when the scene of the game happened. Romario Baro shot the ball into no man’s land from an embarrassing corner. FC Zurich then launched a counterattack.
Nikola Katic sent Mounir Chouiar deep. And he didn’t miss the opportunity to finish off the counterattack. It was 1-0 – and the beginning of the end for Red and Blue in front of 36,000 fans in the sold-out Joggeli. FCB lost 0-2.
The key figure(s)
Xherdan Shaqiri was in FC Basel’s starting eleven for the first time after his sensational return. However, the 125-times capped former national team star was unable to make a major impact and remained largely indifferent. The Basel native had probably imagined his comeback to the starting eleven differently.
However, Zurich’s Nikola Katic and Samuel Ballet played a really strong game. It was Katic who set up FCZ’s 1-0 lead. Ballet, a new signing in the summer and former Winti star, was the whirlwind for Zurich. The Basel team could hardly catch him.
Xherdan Shaqiri did not play well.

The better team
Both teams could actually go into the match with confidence. Before the FCZ match, Basel had not lost their last six competitive matches, while Zurich had not lost in the current championship. And the match on Saturday evening in the Joggeli was just as balanced as these statistics.
But the Zurich team quickly became the better team. While FCZ had dangerous moves again and again, Red and Blue had a lot of trouble. Red and Blue presented themselves without bite – symbolically: FCB star Dominik Schmid lost part of his tooth in the first half. Even Taulant Xhaka, who made his 400th appearance for FC Basel, could not do anything. And: The red card for hapless Baro definitely did not help the Basel team in the final phase either,
FCZ deserved to win.

The grandstand twittering
Before the match, Fabian Frei was bid farewell. He moved to FC Winterthur, his youth club, on the last day of the transfer window. The departure was not entirely without controversy. The veteran player wanted a different farewell, as he said in an interview with 20 minutes. Now the FCB record player has officially bid farewell.
The club’s biggest names came: Marco Streller, Valentin Stocker, Karli Odermatt, Benjamin Huggel and Behrang Safari were also there. The Muttenzerkurve presented a huge banner: “A player for eternity – thank you Fabi”. Emotional scenes that did not leave Frei unscathed. He cried.
This is how the teams were received.
