Meanwhile, Real Madrid featured Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Mesut Özil, Xabi Alonso and Angel Di Maria, while FC Barcelona had Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Neymar and Luis Suarez. In 2023, however, none of the players mentioned will be active in the top Spanish division. Only Benzema and Busquets spent the past season in Madrid and Barcelona, but then switched to Al-Ittihad and Inter Miami respectively.
Laporta wants new stars for LaLiga
LaLiga has lost some of its glamour, which cannot be denied simply because of the departures of Ronaldo and Messi – but this is exactly why Joan Laporta is planning to lure top stars to Catalonia, despite all the financial hurdles. “I want LaLiga to have the best players in the world. We are the first to do this to achieve that,” said the Barca president from the Spanish Sport quoted.
“Have to make the leap to Europe”
The reigning Spanish champions are also sporty ambitious. In the last two seasons, Barcelona failed in the group stage of the Champions League and were eliminated early from the Europa League. In the future, the club should belong to the European elite again, Laporta announced: “We are not satisfied with that and have to make the leap to Europe, so we are strengthening ourselves.” After Ilkay Gündogan, Arda Güler should also come, who attracted the interest of all clubs in the Fenerbahce jersey: “It’s true that the scouting department has been watching him for some time.
