News | FC Barcelona are “absolutely” keen to bring Lionel Messi back next summer. Due to the club’s current financial situation, however, the question arises as to how realistic this wish is.
How The Athletic reported, FC Barcelona is continuing to work on a return campaign Lionel Messi (35). The Argentine’s contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of the season. Currently, the Catalans are said to be preparing an official offer for the player. From the sporting environment it is said: “We really want Lionel Messi to return and we will do everything we can to bring him to Barcelona”.
When looking at the financial aspects of an obligation, however, the situation is different. A “senior club source” who remained anonymous to protect her position, told Opposite The Athletic: “Messi is still far from being close and anything else would not be true. At the moment, Barcelona’s problem is the salary cap. The story […] is a hope the club has, but it doesn’t come from any rational place.”
Barcelona’s hope stems from the fact that the player’s contract negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain have stalled. The 35-year-old is said to have only had one offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal at the moment, but the 2022 world champions want to stay in Europe and continue playing football there.
