FC Barcelona, known to be financially ailing, has to pay money to ex-superstar Lionel Messi until 2025. This was confirmed by President Joan Laporta on “La Vanguardia”.
“What he is owed is the deferral of the wage bill that was agreed with the previous board, resulting in outstanding payments until 2025. He is being paid very conscientiously,” explained the Barca boss.

The payments were most likely caused by Messi’s last Barca contract, which expired in the summer of 2021 and after which he left the Catalans for Paris St. Germain.
Laporta’s predecessor, Josep Maria Bartomeu, who had concluded the Messi contract at the time, was still responsible as president.
Recently there were rumors that Messi could return to FC Barcelona after two years in Paris, but the Argentine world champion canceled his ex-club and switched to Inter Miami in the MLS instead.
Lionel’s father, Jorge Messi, told Laporta that “Leo had a very difficult year in Paris and that he wanted less pressure. He was still under pressure with us and I understood his decision.”
Besides Messi, Inter Miami, the MLS club owned by David Beckham, meanwhile have signed another Barca icon in Sergio Busquets.
