FC Barcelona President Bartomeu has resigned

FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned along with all the management. The team boss threatened to express no confidence in the members of the big Catalan club, which has problems on and off the lawn.

Fifty-seven-year-old Bartomeu announced his resignation after today’s leadership meeting. He has been leading Barcelona since 2014.

After successful years, the famous Catalan club is currently not doing very well. The past year ended without winning the trophy and Bartomeu was publicly criticized by the biggest star of the team, Lionel Messi. The Argentine striker wanted to leave the club after a season culminating in a 2: 8 debacle with Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. He stayed only after the threat of having to go to court with the team.

Bartomeu is also criticized by fans and members for the club’s poor financial situation. The dissatisfied part sparked a vote of no confidence in Bartomeu in the coming weeks.

Now the former head of the club tried to persuade the Catalan government to postpone the election due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but failed. He called it an irresponsible decision and announced at a press conference that he could not resign earlier.

“The easiest way would be to resign after the Champions League, but during this unprecedented global crisis, there must have been someone to make a decision. Who would ensure that Messi stayed here? Who would hire a new coach?” said Bartomeu.

After the defeat in Saturday’s El Clásic with Real Madrid, Barcelona dropped to twelfth place in the league table. On Wednesday, the charges of the new coach Ronald Koeman will face Juventus in the Champions League hit.
