Supercopa 2020 and 2021: Draws were just a plan B.
As the reigning winner of the Copa del Rey, FC Barcelona will also take part in the Supercopa de España in 2022. Now, after the end of the season in LaLiga, it is already clear: In the semi-finals of the Supercup tournament there will be a duel between Los Blancos and the Catalans. In the battle for the final ticket, Atlético and the Athletic Club from Bilbao will also clash.
Unlike in 2020 and 2021, there will be no draw for the upcoming edition of the Supercopa. The drawing for the previous tournaments was only possible due to various circumstances – and not wanted from the start.
Since the reformation of the Supercopa, the competition regulations of the Spanish soccer federation RFEF have stipulated that the champions meet the defeated cup finalists and the cup winners meet the runners-up.
The case of 2020: Real was only third in the league in 2018/19 and had to admit defeat to Barça in the Copa del Rey in the semifinals. Because the Catalans became champions as well as cup winners and twice secured the Supercopa participation, the Blancos were allowed to join the tournament as the cup semi-finalist with the most successful cup history. So the concept with the clearly defined pairings – champions against vice-cup winners, cup winners against runner-ups – did not work. It had to be a draw.
The case of 2021: At the Supercopa in January, it was not even clear who was the cup winner and the runner-up cup winner – because the 2020 cup final was not staged in 2020 at all, but only this year after the 2021 Supercopa with a twelve-month delay due to the corona pandemic. And that two weeks before the finale of the current season at the time. Real entered the tournament as champions, Barça as runner-up. Real Sociedad and Athletic only competed as cup finalists. Once again, the concept with the clearly defined pairings – champions against vice cup winners, cup winners against vice champions – was not feasible. It had to be a draw.
At least three Clásicos in the 2021/22 season
The 2021/22 season definitely doesn’t just hold the two Clásicos in the championship. No drawing is required for this, because for the first time everything is clear with the new Supercopa format: Real is runner-up, Barça cup winner, Atlético champion, Athletic runner-up cup winner.
The short competition is to take place again in the first half of January, the exact dates have not yet been set. As in early 2020, the Supercopa is expected to increase again in the Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah. In 2019, the desert state had secured the event for the following three years, the Spanish association promised 30 million euros for it. Because the tournament was not contested there in 2021 due to COVID-19 and was moved to Málaga and Seville, four more teams are likely to travel to Saudi Arabia in 2024.
Barça record Supercopa winner
With 13 triumphs, Barça is the current record winner of the Supercopa, but Real is not far away with eleven successes. Blaugrana last won the competition in 2018, when it last took place in a round-trip mode. In 2020 Lionel Messi and Co. failed in the semifinals to Atlético (2: 3), in 2021 in the final to Athletic (2: 3 ate).
