Release clause unchanged
National goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen may remain at FC Barcelona until the end of his career. As the Spanish champion announced, the second captain of coach Xavi’s team has extended his contract, which originally expired in 2025, until 2028. Now 31, the former Gladbach player would be 36. Longer careers are not unusual for goalkeepers, but they are not guaranteed either.
As in the previous working paper, Ter Stegen’s exit clause at Barça was set at 500 million euros. In Spanish football, such clauses are obligatory and, especially since the world record transfer from Neymar (31) to PSG for 222 million euros, are sometimes extremely high at the top clubs. Eight of Ter Stegen’s teammates have clauses of one billion euros, including young player Noah Darvich (16), who has just been brought in from SC Freiburg.

Ter Stegen has been Barcelona’s goal for nine years now, keeping 159 clean sheets in 379 games and winning 16 titles – including the 2015 Champions League and five league titles. The 34-time national player has meanwhile increased his market value to a whopping EUR 90 million and, with EUR 35 million, is still one of the ten most valuable keepers in the world. Among non-Spanish players, only two professionals have featured more often for Barça: record-holder Lionel Messi (36) with 778 games and Dani Alves (40) with 408 games (to Barcelona’s record players).
