FC Augsburg is urgently looking for a new coach. Now a native Swabian is said to be the top candidate. An ex-Schalke player is apparently not at the top of the list.
When looking for a new coach, FC Augsburg is said to have a top favorite. According to information from the “Augsburger Allgemeine” on Wednesday, Peter Zeidler, German coach of the Swiss first division soccer team FC St. Gallen, is at the top of the wish list.
Accordingly, there has already been contact between the FCA club management and the 61-year-old. However, there is said to have been no contact with André Breitenreiter, who was also previously traded. Swabia-born Zeidler still has a contract in St. Gallen until 2027, so a transfer fee would probably be due.
He is said to have been a candidate at FCA as early as summer 2022. At that time, those responsible had decided to sign Enrico Maaßen. The 39-year-old came to the Fuggerstadt team as regional league champions from Borussia Dortmund II.
He had previously won the championship with SV Rödinghausen (2019/20). He led the Dortmund reserves to ninth place in the 3rd league in the 2021/22 season. A few months after relegation in his debut season, Maaßen’s Bundesliga chapter ended for the time being at the beginning of the week.
After five points from the first seven games, FC Augsburg pulled the ripcord. The points of criticism: Under Maaßen’s direction, the team had recently seriously lacked a balance between offense and defense; the 17 goals conceded in seven league games this season were particularly glaring.
Only 1. FSV Mainz 05, VfL Bochum and Darmstadt 98 conceded more with 19 each. His designated successor Zeidler can point to several positions abroad, but has not yet been the main coach of any Bundesliga team.
