The FBI has rushed to open an investigation into ties between former President Donald Trump and Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign, Special Prosecutor John Durham said in a report on Monday.
The prosecution concludes that the security service had too little evidence to open the investigation. Moreover, it would have relied too much on tips that came from Trump’s political opponents.
Durham spent four years working on his report on the FBI’s Trump investigation, which found no ties to Russia. The prosecution submitted its 306-page report to the US Congress on Monday.
In addition to opening the investigation was hasty, he also believes that the agency has handled this case differently than other politically sensitive subjects. This concerns, for example, the allegations that were circulating at the time about Trump’s rival Hillary Clinton.
Durham says mistakes could have been avoided if the FBI had adhered to “its own principles of objectivity and integrity.”
Trump could probably use report well
Trump will likely use the report as evidence that a witch hunt is underway against him at the top of American society. Still, some Republicans will be disappointed that no one has ended up behind bars.
A Clinton campaign aide and a Russian investigator have been acquitted of lying to the FBI about alleged ties between Trump and Russia. Trump previously spoke of “the crime of the century” and had hoped the investigation results would be released before the previous presidential election, but Durham’s work was delayed.
The US Department of Justice says there is no evidence in the report that errors were made intentionally. The FBI says it has taken measures that have been in force for some time, but what these entail exactly is not clear.
