The US police are investigating the possibility of a woman stealing the computer or hard drive from the office of the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Nancy Pelosi, during the invasion of the Capitol, according to the news agency “Reuters”.
According to information from an FBI agent, the woman may have tried to sell the computer or hard drive to Russian intelligence services. On the same occasion, the FBI agent pointed out that Riley June Williams of Pennsylvania is accused of illegally violating the Capitol building and directing people to Pelosi’s office.
Theft of electronic devices from Congressional offices has been a persistent concern since the Capitol invasion. United States Attorney General Michael Sherwin said that some of these thefts may have put at risk what he described as “national security actions”.
According to a testimony in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the FBI received a complaint from someone who claimed to be Williams’ ex-boyfriend. The informant stressed that Williams “intended to send the computer device to a friend in Russia, who planned to sell the device to Russia’s foreign intelligence service.”
Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill has yet to answer questions from “Reuters”, but two days after the invasion of the Capitol, Hammill said a computer used for presentations had been stolen from Pelosi’s office. It remains unclear whether this device is the same as Williams was accused of having.
As for Riley June Williams, she fled Pennsylvania, deactivated the phone number and removed social media accounts.
